Twelve days of travel immediately followed by the first day of school is proving more than our wee ones can gracefully handle.
The Mayor started Pre-K on Monday and declared a moratorium on his own personal aging process. "I don't want to get any bigger. I am NOT going to grow up ANY MORE," he said.
[Later he amended this proclamation by firmly declaring that he planned to stop growing completely once he reached the age of six.]
Change is hard.
Adding insult to injury, K and I randomly chose this week to discontinue all sippy cup usage here at the House of Joy.
[We are the axis of evil in our own wicked empire.]
As a result, there have been a whole series of ugly temper tantrums.
[Thrown by both the short and the tall people.]
Yesterday morning, The Rooster and I faced off like two burly hockey players.
[Two exceedingly stubborn women going head to head.]
Recalling her recent experience shooting arrows, The Rooster pulled back the string of an imaginary bow and said,"I'm shooting arrows and YOU are the target, Mama."
The battle rages on relentlessly.

Oh my. I'm afraid you and Miss Rooster are in for years of arrow shooting!!

Sis she aim for your butt?
Immediately brought to mind the great song "When I Get to Eleven" from The Terrible Twos. Have a listen...r

Wow! Wait until I tell my kids *I* am NOT the meanest Mom on the planet! :D
I feel your pain. There have been a couple summers where we were scraping up vacation right to the start of school and I thought I would go crazy from the insanity I put myself in.
you need wonder woman bracelets to fend off the arrows. i'll knit some.
You picked the heels of extended vacay and the start of school to stop sippy cup usage? You almost deserve to be shot. By the time it's over, you'll wish someone would shoot you.
I think we finally gave up the sippy cups when the kids asked, and if it was socially acceptable for my 10.5 year old to carry about a sippy cup I would have her do it. This kid spills more stuff that I care to think about. And does a crappy job at cleaning it up.
Good luck you are a brave woman indeed.
No sippy cups, and school starts all at once? You are lucky there is not more than imaginary arrows. Wow, brave.
I thought I was the meanest mom in the world! She is so cute.
arrows from wee ones can be caught with kisses I am told. :) There is so much everyday huh?
Thanks for the warning, because we are all travel from August 16-24, and school starts on the 26th! Much to look forward to.
Ha!
Hang in there.
You are a brave woman to take on the liked of The Rooster!
Why would you discontinue the use of sippy cups? We used them until the children were in about 10 - it was easy, they weren't allowed to have drinks without lids unless they were in the kitchen... They still ask for sippy cups once in a while.
No sippy cups? If I tried that the boys would simultaneously declare a "no clean floors, furniture or walls" policy.
I am embarrassed to admit this, but we had a wee bit of trouble breaking my son from his sippy cup dependency. No amount of pressure (Honey, what will your friends think if they see you using that, you're 7!) would make him give it up. We tried cold turkey once and he literally reverted to addict behavior. "Pleeeease mom, just once, it feels good..." Finally when he turned 8, yes I said it, 8 we pointed out that he might as well be drinking from a bottle. Now we're all about cups, except his morning milk, that he drinks through a straw. Baby steps right? Baby steps.
I do not know how you do it
Proof that the Mayor is even more precocious than his Mom. You did not announce that you did not want to grow up until you were in grade 5. ;-)
Well, no one can say he isn't able to express his emotions. good luck to you on that.
Ouch. Though if mine knew about bows and arrows, she'd be slinging them at me.
If you make it through this week, maybe next week you can tackle world peace?
No more sippy cups? I bow down too thee. You're a braver woman than I!
Hang on by fingernails. Long fingernails available to scratch your own eyes out.
I like your idea of outlawing sippy cups. But, the Rooster...well, she may be up for the sippy cup strike challenge.
Change is hard.
Make the struggle an argument between a Mommy and 5-month-old who refuses to go to sleep unless rocked and I'm there.
You could 'compromise' and buy the kids their own drinking bottles to use instead of cups. My two are 13 and 14 and we didn't have a problem with sippy cups, but I did get tired of all the water bottles around the house (I used to keep water in them in the fridge), so I bought them their own bottles and it is so much less plastic around. Plus, you don't get the spills.
Good luck with the challenges of a strong-willed girl. The aim (and you learn in baby steps) is to mold the will without breaking it. Also, pick your battles. One lady asked me, after my daughter at 18 months had held 2 peas and a piece of carrot in her mouth for 2 and a half hours, even eating a piece of chocolate cake around them!, 'is this battle really worth fighting?' Put a whole new perspective on things. Mind you, 13 years later I'm still figuring out which battles matter and which don't in some areas. Limiting choices is a good way to solve some things - like what to wear and eat and do.
This post brought back memories of my son shreiking "I can't take it!" when he gave up his pacifier.
On a nother note, just realize that travel coffee mugs are just an adult version of the sippy cup!
I will still use an occasional sippy cup just so I know drinks won't get spilled. Usually when R.'s little friends are over. Othewise, I'd be spending the whole playdate mopping floors!
